The UK government has issued a public advisory urging citizens to be prepared for major national emergencies such as a potential World War III, pandemics, internet outages, or extreme weather conditions. In its new national security strategy, the government stated: “We are entering an era where there is a real risk of direct conflict with forces that challenge our national security.”
According to British media reports, as part of the preparedness strategy, households are being advised to purchase at least one battery-powered or hand-crank radio—priced at just £5—as a reliable source for receiving emergency broadcasts during power outages. While car radios may also serve this purpose, the government recommends staying indoors as a safer option during crises.
The government’s dedicated “Prepare” website outlines a list of essential items every household should store in advance. These include a battery-operated torch, portable power bank for mobile charging, extra batteries, bottled drinking water, canned or preserved food, and necessary supplies for children.
The UK government emphasized the need for planning in advance in case power or water supply is cut off for several days, or if people are confined to their homes or instructed to evacuate to safer areas.
To avoid forgetting essential items in the event of a sudden evacuation, citizens are advised to prepare a “grab bag” containing all critical supplies in an easily portable form.
The main objective of this initiative by the British government is to ensure that during any national crisis, the public remains informed, prepared, and safe—without panic.
